Course description

Yearbook is an elective course that gives students marketable experience in print media publishing. This course solely works toward the completion and selling of a large finished product; Lake Havasu High School’s yearbook. Yearbook class is different from every course taught at this school in that it is a real business; maintaining an account that must balance-out at the end of term. In class; students compose; construct; and edit all elements of computerized text layout; graphic art; and digital photography. Students work on many clerical operations; make announcements; maintain signs; conduct student polls; take photos; and write articles. The course in turn covers many of the content standards and objectives encountered in English courses; as does it also for objectives of art; business; and computer technology courses. Because Yearbook is a monetary business; students must cooperatively work with others; must be hardworking; and be eager to be creative. Out of class and after school; students will shoot digital photos; sell and design advertising; and distribute yearbook order forms. Students are responsible for the proper care and handling of our digital cameras. Pairs or groups of students should expect to spend some of their time before and after school working on computerized yearbook pages. This course also examines legal and ethical issues of media law and copyright.

The Lake Havasu High School yearbook program uses an integrated approach to teaching; and learning is recommended as students develop interpersonal relations; career development skills; Workplace Employability Skills and technical knowledge and skills. Students completing this program will be prepared to enter the workforce and/or Postsecondary where they will be able to apply the skills necessary to be in photojournalism while also having a strong portfolio to support their knowledge and skill. The program is designed and delivered as a coherent sequence of school-based and work based supervised learning. Students learn leadership skills and develop their leadership abilities through participation in the state-recognized Career and Technical Student Organization; SkillsUSA. In addition for those students who plan to further their education; the portfolio can help the student to obtain collegiate scholarship assistance and grants.

This course prepares students to work directly with the editors who are responsible for planning and creating the yearbook. These students; mainly working as staff photographers; will be given photojournalist assignments that require them to attend school events; interview students; write copy and meet deadlines.
Because this is a rigorous course and self-motivation is such an important part of this curriculum; students who cannot work at this level and have a “D” or “F” at semester will not be allowed to continue the course the following semester. Students will have the opportunity to participate in SkillsUSA.
