The course focuses on the roles within theatre. Students first explore the role of the actor as they develop skills to allow them to portray roles in monologues and dramatic and comedic scenes. The course will also explore the origins and development of drama in the forms of theatre; film; and television. Students will analyze the influence of cultures; historical periods; social and political trends; prominent artists; and personal beliefs on the content and production of works. The second semester is focused on the roles of the playwright; designer & technician; director; and critic. The roles will be explored through production of student written and existing works. Acting skills will be expanded as the new roles are added to the complexity of production. The course will explore these roles in relation to the origin and development of drama in the forms of theatre; film; and television. Analysis of the influence of cultures; historical periods; social and political trends; prominent artists; and personal beliefs on the content and production of works will be expanded as productions become more expansive and demand greater collaborative efforts amongst students. Students may repeat this course multiple years for credit.
