Course description

In this two-course sequence; students expand their conversational skills through the acquisition of enriched sentence patterns and the continued acquisition of new vocabulary. They are also introduced to an additional 500 simplified characters. The goals of the second year are: (1) mastery sufficient to permit the student to participate comfortably in social conversation; and (2) the acquisition of a firmer foundation with the Chinese writing system; generally considered to be 600 characters. Semi-independent study opportunities will be provided for particularly able students who wish to expand their knowledge of written Chinese beyond the 600-character level.
