Course description

The first-year IB course for German will integrate the language development skills of listening; speaking; reading and writing within common thematic units that will be intertwined with the cultural aspects of German-speaking countries and the contrast/comparison of the German culture to other world cultures. Each unit will stress vocabulary development through daily conversational and listening activities. Listening activities will involve real-time situations utilizing the Internet; movies and multimedia tools. In addition; students will be required to do both independent and group reading activities that will enhance their ability to read both functional and literary text. Special emphasis will be placed upon reading strategies to assist the students' comprehension of any text. Each unit of study will emphasize specific grammatical elements; which will be integrated into written activities and conversation. Students will complete a project-based writing assignment for each unit; which encompasses the unit's vocabulary and grammatical structures. Both formal and informal assessment will be used to identify student progress; which will also include student self-assessment and goal setting.
