This year long course focuses on
1. The transformation and emergence of the Americas as part of the modernization involved in progressive transformation of economic; political and social structures of the Americas; specifically the United States expansionist foreign policies and its political; economic; social and ideological weapons and their impact on foreign policies.
2. The impact modernization had on foreign policy and World War I.
3. Focuses on changing trends in foreign and domestic policies in the Americas in the later decades of the 20th Century.
Special consideration focuses on
a. the significant political; social; cultural and economic changes while considering the transitions to democracy in Latin America and the challenges encountered. (Mexican Revolution; Cuba; Guatemala; Nicaragua; and Argentina).
b. exploring the domestic and foreign developments in the U.S. and Canada with specific focus on the domestic policies and achievements of particular leaders. In the U.S.; an examination of the economic development and changing composition of the main political parties and in Canada; the examination of separatism of the Quiet Revolution.
c. the civil rights and social movements post 1945; specifically its origins; nature; challenges and achievements of the civil rights and social movements.
