Course description

Spanish I is an introduction to the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries to build 21st century literacy skills. This course will focus on the three modes of communication in the target language; interpersonal (person-to-person speaking or writing); interpretive (listening and reading); and presentational (one-way speaking and writing). These skills and the cultural perspectives are addressed through basic conversational and grammatical structures.

Units of Study:
1. Students can introduce themselves and ask others about themselves. Students will tell time; count to 100; and identify the days of the week.

ÔÉò How do I greet and say good-bye in the target language?
ÔÉò How do I introduce myself in the target language?
ÔÉò How do I convey basic information about myself in the target language?
ÔÉò What are cultural norms when greeting someone?
2. We continue to work with introductions by discussing likes/dislikes and countries of origin using the proper subject pronouns and conjugations of "ser." To promote global awareness; we will also locate Spanish speaking countries and major cities on a world map.

ÔÉò How do I introduce specific information about myself?
ÔÉò How can I differentiate who I am speaking to or about?
3. Students can describe personality traits; physical traits; and clothing.

ÔÉò How do adjectives function in Spanish?
4. As students learn to describe family members and relationships; they will use tener; possession using "de;" possessive adjectives; and dates.

ÔÉò How do I describe how family members are related?
5. Students will talk about school/schedule activities using: Present tense of -ar verbs; Present tense of -er verbs; Present tense of -ir verbs; Frequency with adverbs; Hay Que; Tener Que

ÔÉò How do I describe my classes and classroom objects?
ÔÉò How do I talk about how often I do something?
ÔÉò How do I talk about obligations?
6. Students will ask questions and talk about school activities and after school plans. Students will sequence events and request food. Students will use Querer; Ir; Oír; Hacer; and Conocer v. Saber.

ÔÉò How do I ask and answer questions in the target language?
ÔÉò How do I say where I am going?
7. Students will use level appropriate vocabulary to discuss sports activities. This unit introduces: Stem-changing verbs; comparisons; acabar de; venir de; and Ser v. Estar.

ÔÉò How do I make comparisons?
ÔÉò How can I share my preferences?
