Course description

This course is an introduction to the language and culture of countries that use ASL to build 21st century literacy skills. This course will focus on the three modes of communication in the target language; interpersonal (person-to-person signing); interpretive (receptive); and presentational (one-way signing and writing). These skills and the cultural perspectives are addressed through basic conversational and grammatical structures.
Units of Study:
1. Making Acquaintances:
Essential Questions:
How do I greet & say goodbye in the target language?
How do I introduce myself in the target language?
What are cultural norms when greeting others?
How do I convey basic information about myself in target language?
Success Criteria:
I can sign and respond to salutations.
I can introduce myself and others.
I can sign hello and goodbye to someone my age or younger.
I can sign numbers up to 20 correctly.
I can fingerspell my name and can sometimes understand others when they fingerspell
I can respond to yes/no questions.
I can sometimes understand simple questions or statements on familiar topics.
I can ask who; what; when; where; and how questions
I can create and present a Deaf Folklore story

2. Getting to Know You More
Essential Questions:
How can I use “yes/no” and “wh” questions in conversations?
Can I count to 100 and explain the days of the week?
Can I explain about foods or simple activities I like or want to do?
How do I use simple directional verbs?
Success Criteria:
I can respond to “yes/no” questions
I can respond to “wh” questions
I can count to 100.
I can sign the day of the week.
I can list items I see every day
I can recite a simple poem.

3. Where can we go? Where can we Celebrate?
Essential Questions:
Can I explain where I am from or where I was born?
Can I sign common cities and states in the U.S.?
Can I use singular and possessive pronouns correctly?
Can I give my address; phone number; and email to another person?
Success Criteria:
I can respond to “yes/no” questions
I can respond to “wh” questions
I can sign where I was born or grew up.
I can sign about something about friends and classmates.
4. Family-Relatives; Friends and People
Essential Questions:
Can I demonstrate Use of Space by using “shoulder/shift” or “contrasting structure?
Can I use “listing technique” to explain about my family?
Can I demonstrate using numbers within the “age spot” to talk about people’s ages?
How do I use simple directional verbs?
Success Criteria:
I can say something about the members of my family and ask about someone’s family.
I can use the “age spot” to explain ages of my family and friends.
I can list items I see every day.
I can recite a simple poem
5. Schools
Essential Questions:
Can I sign my school year?
Can I ask others about subjects they are skilled/inept in?
Can I sign about my schedule?
Can I explain the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of Deaf education choices?
Success Criteria:
I can sign about school subjects.
I can use classifiers for common vehicles.
I can explain the different types of schooling for Deaf people.
