Course description

Course Description-

This course is designed and offered in partnership with Fountain Hills Theater; a non-profit community organization dedicated to providing live; quality theatre experiences and performing arts education to the community. This is the entry-level course for the three-year sequence of our Live Theatre Performance and Productions program. This class introduces students to live theater; helping them acquire the skills needed to become well-rounded participants in both the performance and technical aspects of theatre. In this course; students learn basic performance skills such as stage movement; vocal training and characterization; as well as a basic understanding of lighting; sound and set design. Students will also begin developing an overview of theatre.

Students will also learn about the physical space of the theatre and its terminology; theatre safety; improvisation; monologue; voice; and modern script scoring. At the onset of the course; students will become familiar with the auditioning process. Also covered in this course are cast and crew discipline and etiquette; and an overview of theatre history. Students will explore careers in the performing arts; acting styles; scene work; play analysis; and the technical aspects of productions.

To earn a fine arts credit in this course; students must be selected through the audition process and participate as an actor or actress in at least one live theatrical production at Fountain Hills Theater. This class meets outside of the regular school day and the majority of the coursework is incorporated through learning; preparing; rehearsing and performing in all scheduled and required Fountain Hills Theater performances of the selected production.

Anchor Standard #1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

TH.CR.1.HS1b: Explore the impact of technology on design choices in a theatrical work;
TH.CR.1.HS1c: Use script analysis to generate ideas about a character that is believable and convincing in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
TH.CR.2.HS1a: Discuss the function of history and culture in the development of a dramatic concept through a critical analysis of original ideas in a theatrical work;
TH.CR.2.HS1b: Collaborate as the actor; director; playwright and designers to explore their interdependent roles in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #3: Refine and complete artistic work.
TH.CR.3.HS1a: Practice and demonstrate a devised or scripted theatrical work using theatrical staging (blocking; movement);
TH.CR.3.HS1b: Justify technical design choices to support the story and emotional impact of a devised or scripted theatrical work. (e.g. lighting; sound; scenery; props; costumes; makeup; media);
TH.CR.3.HS1c: Explore physical; vocal and psychological choices to develop a performance that is believable; authentic; and relevant to a theatrical work.

TH.PR.4.HS1a: Research various character objectives and tactics in a theatrical work to overcome an obstacle;
TH.PR.4.HS1b: Apply pacing to better communicate the story in a theatrical work.

TH.PR.5.HS1a: Use a variety of acting techniques to expand skills in a rehearsal or theatrical performance;
TH.PR.5.HS1b: Use researched technical elements to increase the impact of design in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #9: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
TH.RE.9.HS1a: Examine a theatrical work using supporting evidence and criteria; while considering art forms; history; culture; and other disciplines;
TH.RE.9.HS1b: Apply the aesthetics of the production elements in a theatrical work;
TH.RE.9.HS1c: Describe the playwright's purpose for an intended audience in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #10: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experience to make art.
TH.CN.10.HS1a: Investigate how cultural perspectives; community ideas and personal beliefs impact a theatrical work;
TH.CN.10.HS1b: Explore how cultural; global; and historic belief systems affect creative choices in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal; cultural; and historical context to deepen understanding.
TH.CN.11.HS1a: Research how other theatre artists apply creative processes to tell stories in a devised or scripted theatrical work;
TH.CN.11.HS1b: Use basic theatre research methods to better understand the social and cultural background of a theatrical work.

Grading-

Grading will be on a Credit/No Credit basis. Credit is earned by meeting all requirements; commitments; and obligations to the production; and meeting the Arizona Theatre Standards for high school at the Proficient level.
