Course description

Course Description-

This course is designed and offered in partnership with Fountain Hills Theater; a non-profit community organization dedicated to providing live; quality theatre experiences and performing arts education to the community. This is the advanced course for the three-year sequence of our Live Theatre Performance and Productions program.

Students will study theater history; explore careers in the performing arts; playwriting; acting styles; scene work; play analysis and technical theater. In addition to further training and study of performance and technical areas; students will focus on the design of specific technical areas and the implementation of those designs in the theater; collaboration with other students; and analysis and interpretation of theatrical productions while continuing to develop a professional portfolio. Students are required to attend and critique a production other than the one they are participating in to earn credit for this class.

To earn a fine arts credit in this course; students must be selected through the audition process and participate as an actor in a live theatrical production at Fountain Hills Theater. This class meets outside of the regular school day and the majority of the coursework is incorporated through learning; preparing; rehearsing; and performing in all scheduled and required Fountain Hills Theater performances of a selected production.

Standards-

This course addresses these Arizona Theatre Standards for high school grades 9-12:

Anchor Standard #1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
TH.CR.1.HS1a: Synthesize knowledge from a variety of dramatic forms; theatrical conventions; and technologies; including rights and royalties to create the visual composition of a theatrical work.
TH.CR.1.HS1b: Design and implement a complete design for a theatrical work that incorporates all elements of technology necessary for a piece/production. (e.g. lighting; scenery; sound; props; costumes; media; makeup; rights and royalties).
TH.CR.1.HS1c: Integrate cultural and historical contexts with personal experiences to create a character that is believable and authentic in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
TH.CR.2.HS1a: Develop and synthesize original ideas in a theatrical work utilizing critical analysis; historical and cultural context; research and western or non-western theatre traditions.
TH.CR.2.HS1b: Collaborate as a creative team to create artistic solutions and make interpretive choices in a devised or scripted theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #3: Refine and complete artistic work.
TH.CR.3.HS1a: Conceptualize the style; genre or form in a devised or scripted theatrical work.
TH.CR.3.HS1b: Employ a high level of technical proficiency to support the story and emotional impact of a devised or scripted theatrical work (e.g. safely utilize technical theatre practices).
TH.CR.3.HS1c: Perform ideas from research and script analysis to create a believable; authentic; and relevant piece in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #4: Select; analyze and interpret artistic work for performance.
TH.PR.4.HS1a: Apply reliable research of directors' styles to create unique choices for a directorial concept in a theatrical work.
TH.PR.4.HS1b: Apply a variety of researched acting techniques to character choices in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #5: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
TH.PR.5.HS1a: Apply and justify a collection of acting techniques from reliable resources to prepare a believable and sustainable performance.
TH.PR.5.HS1b: Explain and justify the selection of technical elements used to build a design that communicates the dramatic concept.

Anchor Standard #6: Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
TH.PR.6.HS1: Present a theatrical production for a specific audience that employs research and analysis grounded in the creative perspectives of the playwright; director; designer; and dramaturg.

Anchor Standard #7: Perceive and analyze artistic work.
TH.RE.7.HS1a: Use historical and cultural context to structure and justify personal responses to a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #8: Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
TH.RE.8.HS1a: Modify character choices using the work of others when participating in or observing a theatrical work.
TH.RE.8.HS1b: Apply new understandings of cultures and contexts to theatrical work.
TH.RE.8.HS1c: Justify multiple aesthetics; preferences; and beliefs that informs artistic decisions in a theatrical work.

Anchor Standard #9: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
TH.RE.9.HS1a: Research and synthesize cultural and historical information related to a theatrical work to support or evaluate artistic choices.
TH.RE.9.HS1b: Analyze and evaluate varied aesthetic interpretations of production elements for a theatrical work.
TH.RE.9.HS1c: Compare and debate the connection between a theatrical work and contemporary issues that may impact an audience.

Anchor Standard #10: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experience to make art.
TH.CN.10.HS1a: Collaborate on a theatrical work that examines a critical global issue using multiple personal; community; and cultural perspectives.
TH.CN.10.HS1b: Develop a theatrical work that identifies and questions cultural; global; and historic belief systems.

Anchor Standard #11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal; cultural; and historical context to deepen understanding.
TH.CN.11.HS1a: Justify and document the creative choices made in a devised or scripted theatrical work based on critical interpretation of specific data from research.
TH.CN.11.HS1b: Document and present and support an opinion about the social; cultural; and historical understandings of a theatrical work; based on critical research.

Grading-

Grading will be on Credit/No Credit basis. Participants will earn credit by meeting all requirements; commitments; and obligations to the production and by demonstrating proficiency in the Arizona Theatre Standards for high school at the Advanced level.
