The program of English instruction introduced in the freshman year continues in this year-long class; as students explore different genres of literature. Based on the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards; this course provides students with the skills and knowledge to become advanced critical readers and writers by analyzing multiple themes; interpretations; and details; craft and structure; and the integration of knowledge and ideas in literature and informational text. Reinforcing and expanding the writing objectives of the freshman year; this course will develop the student’s writing sk8ills by examining text types and purposes and by writing arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts. Students will write explanatory/information texts to examine and convey complex ideas; and will write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events. Students will use research methods to participate in a range of collaborative discussions and presentations; integrating multiple sources of information. This course will further advance students’ knowledge of the conventions of Standard English and will strengthen vocabulary acquisition and use. Students will receive 1.0 credit in English upon completion of this two semester course (0.5 credit each semester).
