Course description

Course Title: English 12 - Science and Technical Writing
Pre-Requisites: Junior English and a passing score on the Maricopa Community College Accuplacer test.
This course is designed to prepare STEM-focused students for communications they will encounter during their collegiate and professional careers. The course focuses on learning how to write effective technical/scientific documents for academic and professional settings and to present specialized information in an accessible way to a variety of different audiences. Students who complete this course should be able to:
• Read and critically analyze a variety of texts including
o non-fiction
o science/technical related fiction.
• Write a variety of effective texts; including technical and scientific documents that address specific audiences; tasks and purposes.
• Integrate illustrations (e.g. tables; graphs; charts; photographs; equations; etc.) to supplement reports.
• Conduct research; using books; electronic databases; Internet sources; professional and trade journals; etc. on a given topics and write an appropriately documented report based on that research.
• Present findings in a variety of ways; including formal written work; presentations; online presentations; etc.
• Demonstrate Standard English conventions.
