Course Description: Health Care Science is designed for students interested in becoming a health
professional. You will explore many areas of the health field including medicine; lab technology; medical
terminology; physical therapy; and many more! A typical day in the classroom may include a lecture;
laboratory experiment; class activity or guest speaker.
Materials: blue or black pen; pencil; textbook; Health Careers Science Binder; spiral notebook; color
pencils
Health Careers Science Binder: You will need a HARD COVER three ring binder that will contain all
of your papers for a semester. You will also need a spiral notebook for taking notes. Dividers with the
following headings should be included: graded work; handouts; and notes. Keep all assignments and place
them in the appropriate section of your notebook as they are returned to you. Notebooks will be graded
based on organization and specific assignments/notes that I will be looking for. Notebooks will be
collected once each quarter. They are worth 50 points each quarter.
Laboratory: You will be completing a variety of laboratory experiments and health skill check-offs
throughout the year. The labs are designed to help you develop problem-solving skills and to enhance the
learning process. The health skills check-off will assure proficiency with specific health procedures. Lab
time is valuable and should not be wasted. It is important for you to be here on lab days since some of the
activities may take several days to complete. It is very difficult to make up a lab and get the same learning
experience you would during class. You are expected to stay at your assigned station and work
cooperatively. Fooling around will not be tolerated.
Make-up work and specific policies: If you are absent; please check my webpage for assignments;
lecture; reading pages etc. Work must be made up within two days of the absence.
1. Tests and quizzes are announced several days in advance. You must make arrangements with me
to make up your test or quiz upon your return to school.
2. Full credit will be given on the day an assignment is due WHEN I COLLECT IT FROM THE
CLASS. Reduced credit will be offered on assignments at the discretion of the teacher.
Students will have NO MORE than 5 school days to submit the assignment. It is highly
recommended that students complete their assignments on time in order to receive the
maximum benefit from the assignment.
3. Academic Misconduct policy will be enforced in this class. Please refer to the student handbook
for the full text of this policy. Academic misconduct occurs any time an individual takes
another individual’s work and represents it as his/her own. It is expected that you will
complete your own work in this class. If working in groups; you are still responsible for your
individual responses. Copying another student’s homework or class assignment is considered
cheating. Giving your assignment to another individual to copy or telling another student the

content of a quiz or test is considered academic dishonesty. Disciplinary action may range from
an “F” on a test or assignment to suspension from the course or school. Parents will be notified.
4. Passes will be granted for the restroom; as long as the privilege is not abused. Please do not
disrupt class to ask for a pass. Your school planner is your pass!
5. All electronic devices will be turned off and remain out of sight during class time. Cell phones
out during a quiz or test will be considered cheating.
First offense: Verbal Warning. After the first offense; a referral will be written for defiance of
authority.
Tardies: The tardy policy will be enforced. You are expected to be inside the classroom by the final
bell or you will be marked tardy. Multiple tardies will result in disciplinary action per school tardy
policy.
Truancy(unexcused absences): will result in a loss of credit for any assignments; tests; or projects
occurring during the absence.
General Classroom Expectations:
1. No food or drink in classroom. (water bottles o.k.)
2. Remain in your seats until the bell rings.
3. Be prepared-organization will help you be successful in class.
4. Be polite and respectful to others.
5. Participate: Attend class regularly and become involved in classroom discussions and
activities
Help Hours: I encourage you to seek extra help immediately if you feel unsure of the class
material. I will be available before or after school by appointment.
Grading: All assignments are graded on the point system. Each assignment; lab; test; etc. have
different point values depending on its length or difficulty. Your quarter grade can be
determined by totaling all points earned during the quarter and dividing by the total points
assigned. The semester grade will be computed using the following scale: 1st quarter: 40%; 2nd
quarter: 40%; Semester Exam: 20%. A standard grading scale will be used:
90-100 - A
80-89 - B
70-79 - C
60-69 - D
59- - F
Grades will be posted on line. You are encouraged to check often via infinite campus.
Health Care Science is the initial course in the Health Occupations block. It is designed for
students who have a strong interest in health care and plan on taking additional courses in the
district’s Health Occupations Program. Students taking this course are expected to demonstrate
basic medical skills and become familiar with standard medical terminology
Please Return:
I have read; understand; and will abide by all of the information in the classroom syllabus
and science safety contract. I am also aware of the binder requirement for this class which
includes: Hardcover three ring binder; spiral notebook; 3 dividers (graded work; handouts;
