Course Description

The purpose of Beginning Dance is to provide the students with training; knowledge; and application in various dance styles. Students will be introduced to the dynamic capabilities of the body as an articulate means of expression. Basic concepts and skills from ballet; jazz; contemporary; improvisation; and floor work will be included in the curriculum. Classwork will be focused on developing efficient alignment; strength; flexibility; coordination; rhythm; dynamics; and spatial awareness. During the course of the year; students will be required to become a part of the semester performance. 

 

Objectives

  1. To learn self discipline; and dedication to the art form. 
  2. To explore difference dance styles and techniques through various exercises in movement. 
  3. To develop a dance vocabulary. 
  4. To develop a general understanding of dance history. 
  5. To develop a beginning level of choreographic skills. 
  6. To develop self-confidence and respect for one’s self and peers.
