Course description

This course covers world history from early civilization to the present. Students are required to read literary works and other primary source materials that relate to the course. Strong writing and research skills are necessary to be successful in this class. Critical thinking and problem solving will be encouraged; along with individual and group multiskill projects in this challenging course. In Segment 1; students will learn about how the Roman Empire developed in two very distinct directions; the intellectual and cultural contributions of the Islamic Empires; the Middle Ages of Europe and Japan; the rise and fall of some of the great kingdoms of the Americas and Africa; the Renaissance; Reformation era; and the Age of Discovery. In Segment 2; students learn about advancements in science and thought during the Age of Enlightenment; as well as the social and political revolutions that followed as a result. Students will then learn about the transformation from an agricultural to an industrial world; the interconnectedness of nationalism and colonialism; the two massive world wars that were the end result; development in the modern world; and the implications that historical events have on us today.† This course will address the needs of an AP curriculum and prepare students for the option of taking the College Board?s Advanced Placement Exam.
