This intermediate-level course builds upon foundational ASL skills by developing students’ ability to communicate effectively in formal and informal settings. Students will narrate and retell stories using appropriate sequencing, supporting details, cohesive devices, complex grammatical structures, conditional clauses, and varied verb inflections. They will discuss and express opinions on a broad range of topics, including contemporary social issues affecting the Deaf community.
Students will analyze the linguistic structure of ASL, compare its features with English and other spoken languages, and apply culturally appropriate variations in signing style, vocabulary, and register. The course emphasizes respectful interaction within the Deaf community, increased awareness of sociolinguistic and cultural issues, and the practical application of Deaf culture. Students will also complete independent research, service-learning, or volunteer experiences related to ASL and the Deaf community. By the end of the course, students are expected to demonstrate intermediate-mid to intermediate-high proficiency in receptive and expressive ASL skills, based on ACTFL guidelines.
