Course title

Chemistry

Pre-requisite

Algebra

Course description

The Chemistry curriculum is designed to continue student investigations of the physical sciences that began in grades K-8 and provide students the necessary skills to be proficient in chemistry. This curriculum includes more abstract concepts such as the structure of atoms; structure and properties of matter; and the conservation and interaction of energy and matter. Students investigate chemistry concepts through experience in laboratories and field work using the processes of inquiry (Excerpt from the Georgia Department of Education Performance Standards).†

Placement Notes:It is recommended that students complete a standard Algebra course and the first half of a standard Chemistry course before enrolling in this course.† The student will explore the fundamental concepts of chemistry as he engages in reading and responding exercises; hands-on and virtual lab experiments; and interdisciplinary problem-solving activities. Throughout the course the student will analyze the nature of solids; liquids; and gases; investigate the properties of solutions; describe and calculate the energies of different types of reactions; begin to explore electrochemistry; and continue to examine the fundamental concepts of nuclear and organic chemistry. The course provides many opportunities for the student to apply these concepts to real-world situations.
