This 10th grade required course is the first half of a two-semester required course sequence for all sophomores. In this course, students will examine civics, which includes the rights and responsibilities of living and participating in our democracy and society. Units include the foundations and structures of government, power and democracy, and action projects with student action and participation in creating a just community. Skills emphasized in this course include written and oral communication, research, and analysis and evaluation of history, citizenship, government, and politics. Note: The Civics standards are now specifically required by the state of Oregon in order to graduate high school. If you already have received Civics credit on your transcript, see your counselor to discuss an alternate placement. If you are going to be in 11th or 12th grade and still need Civics credit, discuss credit recovery with your counselor. There may be recovery through summer school or other recovery classes offered.
