In this first semester Financial Math course, students will learn how to calculate whether they have enough money to purchase something, how to calculate sales prices, and add sales tax. They will learn the different types of taxes citizens pay and how to fill out a tax form. Students will be able to describe how a budget works and how to create a balanced budget. In addition, students will learn how financial institutions work, the types of bank accounts, and how to work with interest rates. Credit, debt, and credit cards will be covered, and students will learn about the risks of using credit, along with identity theft. Finally, banking tools and apps will be explored to help students manage their finances.
In this second semester of Financial Math, students learn the skills and knowledge they need to plan how to financially manage the purchase of insurance for cars and houses, and how student loans work. They will also learn about medical and dental insurance; how it works and the insurance options available. Life and Disability Insurance is also covered and the reasons why these types of insurance are an important part of personal financial planning. Students learn about investments, the investment market, and investment strategies. Finally, students conclude the course by learning about planning for retirement and looking ahead as part of their financial plans.
