Course description

"Introduction to Book Arts" invites students to explore the book not just as a vessel for words but as an expressive art form. Through hands-on projects, students will create unique books that transcend traditional boundaries, using diverse binding techniques and structures. From pamphlet stitch to Coptic binding, and accordion folds to inventive student-created designs, students will gain experience in crafting books that communicate visually and conceptually. This course introduces the rich history of artists' books, examining their evolution from fine art to modern contemporary interpretations. With a focus on craftsmanship and creativity, students will explore how book forms serve as visual statements—independent of text—and develop their own one-of-a-kind creations.
