Newcomer English Language Arts is designed to deliver targeted support to students who require foundational skills in both reading and writing with an emphasis on composition and grammar. This course uses a variety of texts and genres including American and world Literature and short texts in order to develop foundational reading comprehension; writing; and grammar skills. This course will allow students to develop the academic vocabulary and discourse needed to establish comprehension and composition skills. Mastery of these skills will be displayed through Arizona state assessments and end-of-course exams stated within the scope and sequence with expository and argumentative writing compositions by the end of the school year.††
