The targeted English series is designed to support students not yet proficient in English as measured by the AZELLA with grade level content in ELA. Utilizing sheltered instruction strategies, universal accommodations, small group instruction, and expanded listening and speaking opportunities, student are able to access instruction in grade level standards while continuing to progress in their English proficiency. This course is offered in conjunction with an ELD course for eligible students. Please see attached pacing guides.
Course Catalog Description: Mastery of the AZ English Language Proficiency Standards will be the focus of this course with the AZ English Standards for English 9 embedded as students develop their English proficiency through the use of a variety of text types and genres and will be able to communicate effectively about them. This will include learning to complete in-depth analysis of functional, expository, persuasive, and literary texts, as well as poetry, drama, and novels. Students will work to enhance their communication and problem-solving skills by developing the ability to provide support for their opinions.
