Course description

This course is a comprehensive study of Earth's processes in the hydrosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Coursework includes the study of Earth's formation, layers (crust, mantle, inner and outer core), and systems. Students investigate the theory and mechanisms of plate tectonics, including radioactive decay and convection, and how these processes lead to earthquakes, volcanism, and the formation of mountains. Additionally, the curriculum covers geological time, the rock and fossil record, and major events in Earth's history such as mass extinctions and climate change. The final portion of the course focuses on the solar system's formation (nebular hypothesis), renewable and nonrenewable resources, and the impact of human activity on the environment.

Per ABOR Requirement, "A Laboratory Science course is defined as a course in which at least 1 class period each week is devoted to providing an opportunity for students to manipulate equipment, materials, or specimens, to develop skills in observation and analysis, and to discover, demonstrate, illustrate, or test scientific principles or concepts, such as chemistry, physics, earth sciences and biology."

In order to be reviewed as a laboratory science, we will need a list of laboratory experiments completed for this course and number of hours students spend doing laboratory assignments each week.
