Course description

Yearbook is a course that combines graphic design; photography; and creative writing. Throughout the year; students work on pieces that are ultimately compiled into a yearbook for the school. As part of the course; students learn about the history of printing; graphic design; and photojournalism. Topics include the history of writing; the development of the printing press; an analysis of Pulitzer Prize winners in photojournalism; and more. Students also study theory of graphic design and photography focusing on composition and editing. As they do so; students conduct critical analysis of works by important photographers focusing on different elements of composition; such as Margaret Bourke-White (portraiture); Henri Cartier-Bresson (candid); Ansel Adams (landscape); Dorthea Lange (emotion); etc. Throughout the course; students present their work to their classmates and offer and receive criticism. At the end of the year; students display their work for the whole student body in a ?Yearbook Reveal? show.
