Consumer Math is a class designed to review and reinforce concepts taught in high school math. Concepts covered include a review of fractions; decimals and percents; practical applications and conversion of percents; consumer math concepts such as earning money; banking; investing; saving; borrowing and managing a budget; and taxes. The textbook is Mathematics with Business Applications; Glencoe/McGraw-Hill.
In the fall; the math class is introduced to several consumer math concepts; which include solving problems with percents; converting decimals to percents; solving problems calculating hourly earnings and overtime earnings; and converting salary from various time frames: weekly; monthly; semi-monthly; and annual earnings; as well as the reverse process. The class also learns to calculate pay roll deductions for state and federal tax; and to calculate additional payroll deductions; which include social security and Medicare taxes. The class has learned the procedure for calculating premiums for medical insurance and has been introduced to banking. The students are required to apply percent calculations for most of the consumer math problems they encounter this year.
